John's Island

Johns Island, South Carolina is located just outside of Charleston (west of James Island; east of Wadmalaw Island; inshore from Seabrook Island as well as Kiawah Island. The island is separated from the mainland by the beautiful Stono River, which forms a section of the Intercostal Waterway.  Approximately one-third of the island is within the Charleston city limits. The area is home to the amazing and historic Angel Oak ~ a Southern Live Oak tree estimated to be up too 1500 years old. The tree was named for Justus Angel the nineteenth century land owner on which it stands today. Johns Island is also known for its many farms, producing tomatoes and numerous other agricultural products for the local Farmer's Markets in the Charleston area.

The population of Johns Island, like the rest of Charleston, has been growing as developers are trying to keep up with the demand of new home buyers. Between 2000 and 2010 the islands population grew by 50%, the largest increase in the history of the island. This trend is expected to continue but numerous conservation organizations are striving for ecologically friendly growth.

The island's proximity to downtown Charleston and its scenic property have made it an active location for new housing developments. Numerous high density developments have been created in parts of the island zoned into the City of Charleston. Most of this beautiful island is incorporated within the jurisdiction of greater Charleston county.
